Massive glaciers, huge lakes and mighty rivers drain from the Andes east into the arid Patagonian Steppe, the eighth largest desert in the world. As you move east, the landscape changes quickly from temperate lengua forests to thorny scrubland occupied by guanacos (close relative of llamas), and punctuated with lakes, rivers and mountains. Los Glaciares National Park — 2,800 square miles of wilderness, of which 30% is covered by ice — includes major glaciers like Perito Moreno, Spegazzini and Upsala.
