PAKISTAN

High altitude trekking through a concentration of the tallest mountains on earth, crazy jeep trails over incredibly rugged land, warm and friendly people, no alcohol but no shortage of fun and laughs, and the best honey I’ve ever tasted. A visit to Pakistan was high on my list — to experience the amazing mountains in the Karakoram Range — but I didn’t anticipate the great people, the great food and the lively culture.

My son and I made this 3-week trip to Gilgit-Baltistan in northern Pakistan in order to fulfill one of my bucket list items: hiking to Concordia to see K2, the second-highest mountain on earth. After trekking around 100 miles over very rough land (you call that a trail?!), seeing K2 and other 8,000-meter peaks, we came out at the village of Askole, happy, fit, and with a lot of new friends. I have many interesting stories to tell about Pakistan — if you come to a performance of The Band Of Opportunity, perhaps you’ll hear some. I brought a guitar to play, but it was crushed before I had a chance … come hear the story!
